Indian Runner Duck (Anas platyrhynchos)

General Description: Indian Runner Ducks (Anas platyrhynchos) are domestic ducks that escaped or were released from captivity and now live "wild," or feral, in local ponds and lakes. Indian Runner Ducks are native to India. They generally are white with some brown on the chest and back, they walk upright, and the body seems somewhat elongate for a duck. When they walk on land, Indian Runner Ducks do not waddle like most ducks, but actually run in their upright stance.

Favored Habitat: Ponds in parks and neighborhoods.

Indian Runner Duck (Anas platyrhynchos)
Note the upright stance and the light brown on the chest and back, which is a holdover from their brown-chested ancestors

Where to Find: Neighborhood ponds and city parks (e.g., Lorenzi Park, Sunset Park, and Floyd Lamb State Park).

Comments: In this species, the femur (thigh) bone is unusually short for ducks. This forces them into an upright stance when they walk on land.
