General Description: Red-bellied Woodpeckers (Melanerpes carolinus) are medium-sized woodpeckers with a black-and-white barred back, light front, and red from the back of the neck to the top of the head. There are a few red feathers on the belly, but the name is a bit of a misnomer.
Favored Habitat: Southern and Eastern hardwood forests.
Where to Find: Don't look for Red-bellied Woodpeckers around Las Vegas; rather, look for them in the eastern US from east Texas north to the Canadian border. |
