General Description: Chihuahuan Ravens (Corvus cryptoleucus) are large, all-black birds with a long,
rounded tail, a heavy bill, and a shaggy ruff of feathers around the throat. This species is smaller than the Common Raven of the Mojave Desert, and the bristly nasal feathers extend farther onto the bill. If the wind blows just right, you might be able to see that the downy neck feathers are white, hence that previous common name: white-necked raven.
Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Corvidae.
Favored Habitat: Southwestern desert horn-scrub and open grasslands. |
