General Description: American Pipits (Anthus rubescens) are small, sparrow-like birds with a thin-pointy bill, a streaked breast, a white or buffy eyeline, and white outer tail feathers. Pipits are ground birds that would rather walk (not hop) than fly, and they have been described as looking like a little chicken.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Motacillidae.

Favored Habitat: Around Las Vegas, look for American Pipits during winter in open fields and along roadsides and shorelines.

Where to Find: Look for them at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve and Overton Wildlife Management Area.

Comments: Winter visitors and migrants.
