Asian Clam (Corbicula fluminea)

General: Asian Clams (Corbicula fluminea) are small freshwater clams that grow to about 1-inch long and 1-1/2 inches across. Similar their coastal cousins, these clams burrow into the bottom of sandy and muddy waterways, but in fresh water. The exterior surface is yellow-green (golden) with concentric rings. The inner surface is white to pale purple. The colored layer on the exterior comes off, especially after the clam dies, to reveal white.

Asian Clams are native to southeast Asia, but they have been spread around the world and are considered serious pests.

Taxonomy: Order Venerida; Family Cyrenidae. Also called Asiatic Clam, Golden Clam, Golden Freshwater Clam.

Similar to clams, Quagga Mussels are an invasive species indigenous to the Ukraine. In January 2007, quagga mussels were discovered in Lake Mead, and then subsequently found in Lake Mohave and Lake Havasu.
